OUR STORY

Our story is one of four generations committed to winemaking, rooted in family tradition and values. At Patriotis, we’re proud to share our story, and invite you to learn about the warmth in people, our enduring values, and passion behind every bottle of our wine.

Patriotis Winery is a family owned and operated boutique winery and vineyard , with tradiiton in winemaking that dates back in time.

We aim to create honest, low-intervention wine, from sustainably grown grapes, in the classic old-world French style. We want to ensure every bottle is a true expression of us and our commitment to excellence.

The Rebel's Roots (1868–1930)

The wine village of Vouves has a long history of winemaking. Our ancestor, Giorgos Stylianoudakis or, as he was better known, Spanoudogiorgis
(1868-1930), was an expert vine grape grower who also took part in the Theriso Revolution (i.e. the most important uprising of the Cretans in 1905) aiming to reunite Crete with mainland Greece. Spanoudogiorgis had two children in his lifetime, Manolis -later on nicknamed Patriotis- and Anastasia.

The First Generation: The legend of 'Patriotis' (1889–1939)

The story of our winery begins with Manolis Stylianoudakis, son of Spanoudogiorgis. In early 1910s, Manolis Stylianoudakis (1889–1939) left his home in Vouves to seek a better life in the United States.

Working in the dark, demanding coal mines, Manolis never forgot his roots. He greeted every fellow Greek he met with the word 'Patriotis' (i.e. compatriot). Before long, the word became his own nickname—a badge of honor he would carry back to Crete.

Returning to his ancestral village, Manolis decided to breathe new life into the family vineyards. His determination became legendary; local lore tells of how he bought a massive 1,500-liter Italian oak barrel and rolled it by hand for 7 kilometers, uphill through the rugged Cretan fields, just to bring it home to his cellar.

Manolis lived for his land and, ultimately, gave his life for it.
In 1939, during a harvest that promised much, a tragic accident with his grape-laden cart cut his life short at just 50 years old. He left behind a legacy of hard work and a name that passed down to successive generations and came to symbolize authentic Cretan hospitality.

The Second Generation: A legacy of resilience (1910-1997)

The legacy of Manolis was carried forward by his son, Panagos Stylianoudakis (1910-1997). Known as 'Patriotopanagos' (i.e. the son of Patriotis), he was a man of immense courage. In 1940, duty called him to the freezing mountains of Albania to defend the Greek borders against the Italian invasion during World War II.

The war left a permanent mark on Panagos. Suffering from severe frostbite, he underwent two amputations—first at the ankles and later below the knees. Returning home as a war-disabled veteran, he did not let his physical loss dim his spirit.

In 1945, after the war ended, Panagos turned his focus back to his family and his wine business. He was granted a cigarette monopoly for his café-grocery store in Vouves, which became a local hub. Together with his wife’s brothers, Eftychis and Giorgos Mathioulakis, he officially merged the wine and grocery business, creating a cornerstone for the local economy.

Despite his injuries, Panagos and his wife Sofronia raised seven children (Stelios, Manolis, Marika, George, Christos, Despina, and Nikos). He lived to an old age, a beloved grandfather and a symbol of resilience, leaving behind a family business rooted in quiet sacrifice and perseverance.

The Third Generation: The visionary (1936-2019)

The third generation was led by Stelios Stylianoudakis (1936-2019), known as 'Patriotostelios'. Having worked alongside his father and uncles from a young age, Stelios was the only one of his generation to feel a true professional calling toward the world of wine.

Driven by a desire to implement his own innovative ideas, Stelios made the courageous decision to become independent. Starting almost from scratch with the unwavering support of his wife, Aspasia, he began to transform the family tradition into a modern enterprise.

He invested in the advanced technology of the time—continuous and discontinuous presses—and constructed cement tanks with a capacity of 300 tons.

A true visionary and tireless worker, Stelios lived his life in the vineyards. Yet, his commitment extended beyond his own land; he served as an elected representative of his local community, dedicated to improving the lives of his fellow countrymen in Vouves.

Stelios remained an active vinegrower until the very end, passing away at the age of 84. He left the business in the capable hands of his son Panagiotis - the current owner — having turned a small family trade into a thriving, modern winery rooted in the values of hard work and progress.

The Fourth Generation: Tradition Meets Science (1978-present)

Today, the fourth generation winemaker, Panagiotis Stylianoudakis, carries the torch. Born and raised amidst the family vineyards, Panagiotis inherited more than just land; he inherited a profound passion for the vine and a commitment to winemaking.

After studying Oenology in Athens, he took the bold step forward at age 22 by relocating the winery to a new, purpose-built facility. He equipped it with state-of-the-art oenological machinery, ensuring that every bottle meets the highest modern standards.

2014

A Modern Vineyard: Under Panagiotis' leadership, the family vineyard was strategically expanded and diversified. Panagiotis introduced world-renowned French varieties such as Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, while simultaneously focusing on indigenous Greek grapes with exceptional winemaking potential, like Romeiko, Assyrtiko and Avgoustiatis. By combining the deep-rooted ancestral know-how with modern scientific precision, Panagiotis has marked his own path. Under his care, Patriotis Winery continues to craft authentic wines that bridge the gap between Cretan heritage and international excellence, honoring four generations of history and love for the land.

Vineyards & winery facilities

The authentic character of our wine is primarily expressed in the vineyard. This is where our hard work commences and where the quality of our wines emerges. Mavropila vineyards are located on the east-facing slopes of the valley with a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea.

The morning sun and the cooling north sea breezes from the Aegean Sea, allow the grapes to mature naturally until they reach ideal ripeness. The grape varieties we grow are perfectly acclimatized to our coastal terroir, with evident their varietal characteristics and distinct regional expressions.

Our winery has a wonderful, modern tasting room where one can enjoy the wine accompanied by cold appetizers. This new space is the perfect place for the visitor who seeks to relax, taste our wines and feel the atmosphere of a real winery.

The inner loft overseeing the stainless steel tanks and allowing panoramic views of the valley down to the sea is also available for work group meetings or projection of educational videos.

Our outdoor area consists of a  paved courtyard under plane trees and arbors offering shade during the hot summer months, as well as a lovely green area under the olive grove.
